Michigan cherries

This neck of the woods is known as the Cherry Capital of the World. Did you know that 85% of all of the tart cherries produced in the US are grown in the Great Lakes states? And did you know that cherries are members of the rose family? There are over 2.6 million cherry trees on the Leelanlau and Old Mission peninsulas and each tree can produce about 7,000 cherries a year. Ever get cherry juice on your hands? Try lemon juice to remove the stain.

There are cherry groves and many other fruit tree stands in great abundance. I'm sure when the trees are blossoming, the countryside is beautiful. You also already know that this is grape country (with 71 wineries in Michigan). You'd think this is a state that is "very fruity" and full of "fudgies". I didn't make that up. Summer tourists are referred to as "fudgies", as they must love all of the local fudge for sale. We didn't indulge...in the fudge...but we did help out the local wine industry! Cheers!
