2011 Phoenix Open

Arizona had a second winter cold snap the week of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. We volunteered to work security AGAIN at the 16th hole on Wednesday, Feb 2. That's the hole that is the world famous rowdiest hole on the PGA circuit. Wednesday was the Pro-Am and the only day we could bring in a camera. Well, there wasn't much to photograph because the weather did not cooperate. It was an extremely cold day with the high around 44 degrees and 30-40 mph winds. Needless to say, the play was cancelled to protect the players from injury but also to protect the greens from damage. Before we got word that play was cancelled, we had to endure the ridiculous Arizona elements and freeze our tootsies. It was so bad that there were white caps on the course lakes. We did manage to get a free lunch for our dedication.

Beringer (my favorite wine) had a booth in the vendor tent. No samples or coupons were available when we visited!

They displayed their custom golf cart with wine glass racks on the ceiling and jugs of wine on the back.

A good look at the ferocious wind!

Most tables were empty.

And the stands were also very empty!
Attendance improved on Sunday, our second day for volunteering. The weather was better but the crowd competed with the Super Bowl! We were dismissed early from our security post to let the crowd wander wherever they wished to go. Because of the multiple frost delays during the week, the final round had to run into Monday. Although we were asked if we wanted to return for Monday's finale, we chose to not get up at 5 AM again!
We plan to volunteer again for next year but let's hope there's no winter cold snap!
